Perhaps the most famous of all UK boxing images – William Howard Robinson “A Welsh Victory at the National Sporting Club” engraved print, signed by the artist, showing the momentous fight between Jimmy Wilde commemorated the historic boxing match between Jimmy Wilde, of Wales and Joe Lynch that took place on 31 March 1919 and shows the Prince of Wales entering the ring to congratulate the victor the first time that a member of the royal family had done so. Wilde won on points against the American Joe Lynch creating a boxing legend which is still talked about today. The original painting upon which this engraving is based was sold in these rooms in 2007 for a world record price of £155,000. The present coloured engraving is framed in a ‘tabernacle’ frame, as was the original painting. It comes with a key to the people who are depicted in the print. This is one of the most famous – perhaps the most famous UK boxing image. Print size is 34x27inches. Signed by the artist to bottom left hand corner – slight blemish affecting one letter of the signature but overall in good condition.
