PERROTT, Charlotte Louisa Emily (ca. 1790-1836). A Selection of British Birds. London: Robert Havell 1835. Part I (all published), large 2° (504 x 328mm). 5 hand-coloured engraved plates by Robert Havell after Mrs. Perrott, letterpress 'preface' and 4 leaves of text (no text to accompany the 'Blue Titmouse'), 3 smaller format advertisement leaves for Havell publications and his 'Zoological Gallery' bound-in. Stitched within original buff paper wrappers, engraved title on upper cover (upper cover neatly repaired). Provenance : Lady Rouse Boughton (pencilled signature on upper cover). EXTREMELY RARE, ONE OF FIVE KNOWN COPIES: one copy at Yale; a second in the Hereford and Worcestershire county library; a third at the Radcliffe Science library in Oxford and the Fattorini copy (sale: Christie's 25 October 1995 lot 37). Nissen refers to an article by H.S.Gladstone in the journal British Birds for 1939-40, where he describes what was then the only known copy in the library of the Worcester Natural History Society (now in the Hereford and Worcestershire county library). The plates are of a high standard and the publication was planned to have been on a quite lavish scale (priced at 14s plain or 1 guinea coloured per part), however, the death of Mrs.Perrott in Worcester in August 1836 brought the work to an abrupt halt. The subjects of the plates are: Cock; Ring Dove Woodpigeon; Raven; Whinchat; Blue Titmouse. Fine Bird Books p.80 ("5 very fine hand-coloured engravings. Extremely rare."); Nissen IVB 716a.
