PERSE, St. John (1887-1975). Éloges by Saintléger Léger . Paris: Nouvelle Revue Française and Marcel Rivière & Cie, 1910. 8 o . Original printed wrappers; plain glassine dust wrapper; half morocco chemise and slipcase. Provenance : William Targ. FIRST EDITION OF PERSE'S SCARCE FIRST BOOK, an important influence on modern French poetry. The work looks back on Perse's childhood in the Antilles and its publication marked him as a major poet. André Gide arranged for immediate publication of the corrected text in book form, after 18 poems had first appeared in the Nouvelle Revue Française . Gide wrote to Jacques Rivière that the work distilled for him a kind of "fermented" syrup that went to his head and his heart.
