In 1891 Woldemar von SEIDLITZ... contributed an article to the Berlin JB in wich he clearly differentiated the personalyty of the anonyous artist whom he designatedafter his most famous set of illustrations, as the PETRARCA-MEISTER... it was not until 1904, however, that the gatheringand stifting of material had reached such a stage that Hans RÖTTINGER of Vienna was able, in his Hans WEIDITZ der PETRARCA-MEISTER , to demonstrate that all this work was by the Artistwho had decorated the Brunfels Herbal, and who weas mentioned by name in the preface to that book... These things admitted, however, it is to WEIDITZ that he must look not only for the fullest pictoral commentary on German life during the second quater of the sixteenth century, but for the most dilightful invention of pattern in black and white which his period affords...
