Provenance: George Jessel estate; the photograph was reportedly framed on his wall. Jessel’s typed note pasted to the rear board dates the picture as “around 1957”. But a different photograph of the same group in the Bettmann archives is dated June 28, 1953, reportedly while Hemingway was “negotiating with a motion picture company who wants to film his latest book, Old Man and the Sea”. The book was published in 1952; the film, starring Spencer Tracy as “The Old Man” was released in October 1958. The movie was produced by Hayward, who had once been Hemingway’s Hollywood agent, and had also once proposed marriage to Katherine Hepburn early in her secret romantic involvement with Tracy.
