Phillipe de Stosch..., 1st edition, Amsterdam: Bernard Picart 1724, half title, titles in French and Latin printed in red and black with engraved vignette, text in French and Latin, 70 full-page engraved plates by Picart, including the plate of Hercules and Iole, (frequently suppressed on the grounds of obscenity), occasional light spotting and offsetting, a few small marginal closed tears, later half morocco, spine lettered and decorated in gilt, a little faded with ink stain to first compartment, edges a little rubbed, folio (Qty: 1) Cohen-De Ricci 959. Cicognara 1016. Prussian collector Baron Philipp von Stosch (1691-1757) formed a major collection of antiquities including books and manuscripts, but especially medals and engraved gems, including 3444 intaglios. The present work, based on some of the best collections in Europe, established his reputation as a connoisseur. A notably flamboyant homosexual, Stosch was also active as a secret agent in Rome for the British government under Robert Walpole. Exposed as a spy in 1731, he was forced to flee to Florence where he lived for the rest of his life. His collection gradually expanded to the extent that a separate building was required to house them. Four years after his death it was purchased by Frederick II, King of Prussia.
