Pierre Joseph REDOUTE (1759-1840). Album de Redouté . Paris: Bossange, no date [but 1824]. Large 2° (536 x 353 mm.) Dedication leaf to the Duchesse de Berry, (slightly spotted and small waterstain in lower left corner), stiple-engraved title page depicting a wreath of roses with the text printed in gold and 24 stipple-engraved plates before numbers, printed in colour and finished by hand by Charlin, Langlois, Bessin, Coutin, Talbeaux, Chapui, de Gouy Tassaert and Allais. (One plate slightly frayed, some occasional spotting.) Original yellow publisher's boards, front cover with printed title, same wreath as on title-page printed in black together with printed dedication, within an ornamental border, pastedown bearing the coat-of-arms of the Duchesse de Berry on lower third, (Boards worn and scratched, spine torn with loss). Provenancei Duchesse de Berry (with her ex-libris, 'Biblioth/gque de Rosny' being erased.) FIRST EDITION OF THE RARE ALBUM. IN THE ORIGINAL PUBLISHER'S BOARDS FROM THE LIBRARY OF THE DEDICATE, THE DUCHESSE DU BERRY WITH HER EX-LIBRIS ON THE INNER FRONT-COVER. Each copy being assembled individually from stock of different publications and containing between 24 and 30 plates. The present copy, complete with its title-page and 24 engravings, is composed of Les Roses (4), Les Liliacés (13), Plantes Grasses (2), Jardin de la Malmaison (5). NINE OF THE PLATES APPEAR TO BE PROOF PLATES WITH SOME SECTIONS COVERED DURING THE PRINTING PROCESS. For more than 16 years Redouté held the position of the "Maître du dessin au Muséum d'histoire naturelle". During this period he gave at least 30 public lectures per year entirely devoted to the theory and practice of natural history painting. This post gave him a great deal of publicity and his lectures were attended by many high ranking persons. Thus Queen Hortense, the Duchesse de Berry, Lady Adelaïde d'Orléans (King Louis-Philippe's sister) and Louise Marie the future Queen of Belgium, were amongst his pupils. "Grâce à son enseignement Rédouté était très connu. Il en profita pour mettre en vente un Album de Roudouté , groupant 24 planches reprises de ses grands ouvrages antérieurs et dédicacé à la Duchesse de Berry" ( Pierre-Joseph Redouté , Exhibition catalogue, Paris 1982).
