thread and sinew-sewn on a thick smoke tanned hide; scrolling across the edges, lapel, pockets and shoulders are beaded floral elements in colors of red white-heart, cobalt, yellow, periwinkle, light blue, greasy marigold, opaque, light pink, and translucent green; length 34 in. (excludes fringe) x chest 39 in. fourth quarter 19th century Included is a collection card from the Chicago Historical Society documenting the jacket's proposed history: The coat - a buckskin jacket with extensive beaded decoration - was given to the Society on April 30, 1930, by Andrew D. Graham of Chicago. At the time the coat was stated as having once been the property of Chief Rain-in-the-Face, and as being the one he wore at the Battle off the Little Bighorn. Mr. Graham was apparently a scout attached with Major Reno's command and took part in the pursuit and recapture of some of the participant Sioux, at which time he acquired the coat. Provenance: Deaccessioned from the Chicago Historical Society Condition: Both sleeves with water damage; left shoulder pieces of hide missing.
