Type: 1:117R, 117Greek. 2-4-line initials, paragraph marks and some capital strokes in red. (Some small wormholes occasionally touching text.) English blue morocco janseniste by Riviere & Son. Provenance : an occasional contemporary marginal annotation; later inventory number "17667". FIRST DATED EDITION OF THE FIRST PRINTED BOOK ON COOKERY, and possibly the first edition, since precedence has not been adequately determined between the present edition and that printed at Rome "about 1475". Platina wrote this humanist treatise on the art of good living while enjoying a summer retreat on the Tuscan estates of Francesco Gonzaga. He not only describes the pleasures of dining, but gives practical advice on recipes, the nutritional values of foods, their correct preparation, and sauces suitable to accompany various foods. He also includes a discussion on wine and vinegar. In 1475 Platina was appointed first librarian at the Vatican by Pope Sixtus IV, an event commemorated in a contemporary fresco. De honesta voluptate is the only book known to have been printed at this press. In the present copy the printers' names are omitted from the colophon, and there are only 3 lines of text on the last leaf (93v).
