POLK, LEONIDAS, Major General, C.S.A. Autograph letter signed ("L. Polk") TO BRAXTON BRAGG, Fort Wing, Miss., 29 August 1862. 2 pages, 4to, fold separation neatly repaired, otherwise fine . BRAGG'S INVASION OF KENTUCKY. A fine military letter. After withdrawing from Corinth, Polk crossed the Tennessee River north of Chattanooga heading for the neutral state of Kentucky: "I left Chattanooga yesterday and arrived at...Genl Withers Head Qts....[Withers] will go forward as rapidly as possible so as to put & keep his command one day at rear of [Benjamin] Cheatham...I propose he shall be in his proper place by the time he reaches the top of the mountain on the other side of the Lequatchee Valley...Cheatham's Division I am advised moved up to the neighbourhood of Coulter's Yesterday...I leave immediately & will camp at Genl Cheathams Hd Qtrs tonight." On this same day the Confederate General, E. Kirby Smith, co-ordinating with Bragg, also moved into Kentucky. Defeating Federal troops at Richmond, Ky. on 30 August, he joined forces with the Army of the Mississippi, now under the command of Polk. This combined army fought Buell at the Battle of Perryville in early October.
