Beschreibung:

PONTEY, William. The profitable planter. A treatise on the cultivation of Larch and Scotch Fir timber … with directions for planting … by a new and expeditious method … to which are added useful hints, in regard to shelter and ornament. Huddersfield: Sikes and Smart, [c. 1797]. Engraved frontispiece depicting two planting tools (torn with loss at the margin, not affecting image, some of remaining paper adhering partially to margin of title page, occasional light spotting). Contemporary calf (lightly rubbed). Provenance: Thomas Munroe (bookplate). Unusual for the time, Pontey intended to have a specimen of Larch wood included into his book. Whether this happened is not certain, a copy with this specimen cannot be located. Pontey though makes it clear that he intended to furnish a specimen at the end of his introduction (p.4) and even apologizes for it not having a finer grain.
