Venice: Simon Galignani and Girolamo Porro 1576 [colophon: Giorgio Angelieri and Simon Galignani de Karera, 1575]. Second edition, enlarged with 17 new maps. Porcacchi's ‘isolario’, originally published in 1572, is renowned for the beauty of its etched plates. The third and final part (p.154 onwards) relates to the New World. It includes a reduced version of Forlani’s important map of North America, as well as Temistitan (Mexico), Cuba, Spagnuola, the Moluccas and two new maps of Jamaica and San Giovanni. Two world maps, one a sea chart, bring the resplendent series to an end. Adams P-1905; Nordenskiold II, 187; Phillips Atlases 167; Sabin 64149. Folio (306 x 205mm). Engraved architectural title, 47 half-page etched maps by G. Porro after Porcacchi, woodcut decorations, printer's device on final verso (title with one line excised [‘Con l’Aggiunta di molte Isole’], repair to excision on title verso, mainly marginal soiling throughout, earlier quires also waterstained at lower margin, without final blank). Contemporary mottled calf, spine gilt tooled with repeated fleur-de-lys (restored, some chips).
