Porcelain Soup Plate from the State Dinner Service Designed for Rutherford B. Hayes Designed by Theodore R. Davis for Haviland & Co., 1884-1889 Printed and naturalistically painted with images a game bird, okra and a butterfly, printed on the side with The Great Seal of the United States and stamped on the reverse with H&Co., Theodore R. Davis and Design Patented August 10th, 1880 No.11938. Diameter 9 inches. Cf. a set of twelve soup plates from the State Dinner Service Designed for Rutherford B. Hayes was sold at Doyle, New York, November 19, 2009, , for $31,250 Provenance: Descended in the Bachrach family of Baltimore, Maryland. David Bachrach, photographer, acquired the plate after photographing President Rutherford B. Hayes. David Bachrach, his son Louis Bachrach, his grandsons, Fabian and Bradford Bachrach and his great grandsons Fabian Jr. and Robert Bachrach owned a prestigious photography business beginning in 1864. Throughout the years, the Bachrach's have photographed every president of the United States since 1864, including Lincoln at his Gettysburg address. Literature: Klapthor, Margaret Brown, Official White House China, 1789 to the Present, The Barra Foundation, 1999, pp. 201-88. This plate is accompanied by a reproduction of the photograph of Rutherford B. Hayes, originally taken by David Bachrach. C
