American (Ohio), early 19th century. Oil on canvas on board, housed in gilt frames. A pair of portraits of Marvin (1797-1853) and Mary Foote Oviatt (1795-1876), both originally of Connecticut. Unsigned; Marvin 23.25 x 28.25 in. (sight), Mary 23.25 x 28.5 in. (sight). As a young boy, Marvin's family moved to Connecticut's Western Reserve, settling in Hudson, Ohio in 1800. Marvin's various business endeavors would result in his working in Cleveland, Ohio, Indiana, Richfield, Ohio and eventually California where he sought his fortune in gold. It was on the return journey that he met with his untimely death leaving Mary and their six children in Ohio where their descendants still live today. Provenance: Descendants of the Oviatts Condition: Both were restored at Butler Institute of Art in 1990, some minor paint loss especially at top of frame.
