PORTUGUESE MANUSCRIPT.] -- Estes samos privilegios que sua Magestade concedeo . N.p. [Portugal], 22 April 1586. 199 x 145 mm. MANUSCRIPT ON VELLUM. 38 leaves: title, 35 leaves of text and 2 leaves table. Title within watercolor floral border, second leaf with name "Dom Philippe" engrossed in gold on a blue ground. Written in a cursive hand. Section capitals and paragraph marks in red and blue. Contemporary calf, possibly Portuguese, gilt roll-tool border on sides, central lozenge with floral and bird tools (a bit rubbed and worn). A GRANT OF COMMERCIAL PRIVILEGES TO A GERMAN MERCHANT. With its overseas trade booming, and merchants from all parts of Europe flocking to Portugal, the government kept a tight control over granting trading rights both in its its domestic and oveseas markets. Merchants had to receive official permission to ply their trade and had to share their profits with the crown. Here, a German merchant, Armao Bolant, receives permission to trade between Portugal, India, Africa and Persia. Provenance : Roger W.
