POST MEDIEVAL GOLD CROSS WITH BUTTERFLY HANGER AND DIAMONDS Probably Spanish, 18th century AD An intricately made gold cross with butterfly-shaped hanger, set with diamonds; the hanger holding 10 diamonds with a total weight of approximately 1 carat; the cross holding 13 diamonds with a total weight of approximately 1 carat; the diamonds in Old European cuts; a modern pin attached to the reverse for wear as a brooch. 16 grams, 56 mm (2 1/4"). Very fine condition. [No Reserve] Provenance From an important collection of Christian crosses, County Durham, UK. Footnotes The Victoria and Albert Museum has a number of Spanish crosses in this general style from the same period (18th century). The cutting of the diamonds is characteristic of this time. It is also during this period that diamonds were discovered in Brazil and imported into Europe through Spain, the first discovery of the stones outside India.
