The exterior is carved in high and low relief with a continuous scene of the Seven Sages at various pursuits, one playing a qin , one standing in contemplation, one making his way to join a group of two in conversation, all within an elaborate terraced garden amidst trees and rockwork. The interior is lacquered in black with wood rim and base. 5 7/8 in. (15 cm.) high
