Pourtraits divers. Lyons: Jean de Tournes 1557. 8vo, 148 x 95 mm. (5 13/16 x 3 3/4 in.), light brown morocco, covers gilt-panelled with roll-tooled border, spine gilt, board edges and turn-ins gilt, edges marbled and gilt, by LEBRUN, extremities rubbed, small repair affecting edge of woodcut on leaf [30], a few small marginal repairs, occasional slight marginal soiling, two figures in title border and last woodcut touched up in gray wash, lightly washed and pressed. 64 leaves, unsigned and unfoliated. Title printed within woodcut border with ostrich, elephant, and grotesque figures, from de Tournes's Métamorphose figurée series, 63 woodcuts, printed one to a leaf, most attributed to Bernard Salomon including 22 architectural perspective views, 9 "physiognomy" cuts, and several allegorical and mythological scenes, all used in various earlier de Tournes editions (cf. Cartier and Mortimer for lists of sources). Second edition of this rare suite of woodcuts from de Tournes's stock. "The smaller blocks are printed rather high on the page; the volume may have been intended, as Cartier suggests, as another 'album amicorum' comparable to the Thesaurus amicorum issued by de Tournes at about the same time"--Harvard/Mortimer French 446 (incorrectly calling for 62 plates, the Harvard copy containing 58 pl.); Brunet IV, 850, Suppl. II, 116-17 (citing no complete copies); Cartier II, 387. COMPLETE COPIES ARE RARE. Provenance : 3 or 4 leaves with nineteenth-century annotations ( washed ) -- Horace Landau, bookplate (inventory no. 64754).
