(Prince of Asturias, eldest son of Philip II King of Spain, 1545-68) Letter signed "Yo el princípe" to Gabriel de la Cueva y Girón, Duke of Alburquerque, Governor of Milan, 1p. in Spanish, blind stamped paper seal, folio, Madrid, 12th October 1564, on behalf of his servant, Ruy Díaz de Quintanilla, ("who has served him well"), small tear where opened, browned. *** Carlos, Prince of Asturias was the eldest son and heir of King Philip II of Spain. In 1562 Carlos fell down a flight of stairs and suffered a head injury, rendering his behaviour as dangerous and unpredicatable. Philip II had Carlos arrested in 1568, and he died in solitary confinement six months later. Gabriel de la Cueva y Girón (fifth Duke of Alburquerque, c. 1515-71), Governor of Milan; soldier and statesman.
