Vierzig-Jahrige Reise-Beschreibung. Worinnen dessen durch Turkey, Persien, Indien, und noch mehr andere Oerter, hochst-loblichst-vollbrachte sechsmalige Lander-Reise..., 5 parts in one, Nuremberg: Jn Verlegung Johann Hofmanns, Buch und Kunsthandlers. Daselbst gedruckt bey Andreas Knorzen, 1681, half-title, additional engraved title, letterpress title strengthened to verso, 26 engraved plates (one folding), two engraved maps (one folding map of Japan, torn at fore-edge with slight loss), first and last few leaves frayed to margins, some browning and spotting throughout, lacking free endpapers, contemporary vellum, old crude paper repair at head of spine and vellum repairs at foot of spine and board corners, joints cracked and some wear, folio Blackmer 1630-32; Cordier Japonica 391; Lipperheide La 6; Graesse VI/2, 43; Alt-Japan-Kat. 1472; Mendelssohn IV, 462. The first German edition published in the same year as the issue by J.H. Widerhold in Geneva. The volume comprises a collective edition of the reports of Tavernier's various journeys and the journeys of Spon and Wheler. Containing in the first three parts Tavernier 's descriptions of his travels to Turkey, Persia, India and Japan (a large Japanese map, see Campbell 27f for the French and English editions) with a report on the Japanese persecution of Christians and the Dutch branches of the Far East. The last two parts regard archaeologically and travel of Spon and Wheler. "Tavernier spent eleven months in Constantinople before setting out on his first voyage. He joined a caravan for Persia in 1638 and made six voyages ... to Persia, India, the east Indies and Japan ... He was granted a patent of nobility for his contribution to the establishment of French trade in Asia; it was Tavernier who indicated the only possible trade routes to the East and made it possible for others to follow him. He kept extensive notes on the geography, commerce, natural resources, productions, moneys and customs of each country during the course of his travels" (Blackmer). (1)
