Title: Prospectus (Map) of The Burchard Honduras Fruit Company Author: Place: Publisher: Date: 1891 Description: 5.5 x 8” pamphlet, 6pp. of text, opening to 16 x 22” color map of the huge Burchard Concession below the northeast coast of Honduras, with smaller maps of the entire country and of Central America. Rare. Apparently the only known copy. Neither this, nor any other imprint of the Burchard Honduras Fruit Company appears in WorldCat Brainchild of the US Consul to Honduras who got a huge concession - 40,000 acres of totally uncultivated land - from the Honduran President and Minister of War and then convinced a group of Chicago investors that they could triple their money in two years by planting bananas - or coconuts, oranges, lemons, pineapple or coffee - and transporting produce north to an ocean port either by buying their own line of steamships, or building their own railroad. The map vividly illustrates the size of the concession – 250 miles from the capital. The text extols “the most fertile land in the republic” in a “healthful…magnificent region” – and details“what can be done” with a mere $500, yielding ten acres of bananas (or whatever) – based on a model of “income from plantations in California”. Burchard died four years later, and so did the company. Lot Amendments Condition: Very good. Item number: 271645
