PSALTER, in Latin, DECORATED MANUSCRIPT ON VELLUM [south eastern Germany, c.1475] 174 x 120mm. i + 209 leaves: 1 7(vii a singleton), 2 8, 3 7(of 8, iv excised), 4-7 8, 8 7(of 8, iii excised), 9-20 8, 21 7(of 8, vi excised), 22-26 8, 27 5(i a singleton), modern foliation in pencil, prickings visible in outer margins, catchwords at lower inner margin on versos of a few gatherings, 18 lines written in black ink in a gothic bookhand between two verticals and 19 horizontals ruled in brown, justification: 119 x 77mm, rubrics in red, square musical notation on staves of 4 lines in red, one- and two-line initials in red or blue, three- to six-line initials with staves of red or blue with penwork decoration in black or red, Psalm 1 opening with large illuminated initial of burnished gold on a blue, red and green ground, with accompanying three-quarter page border of blue, red, green and gold acanthus, gold and red tendrils with flowerhead terminals, gold disks and an eagle hovering above a mallard (lacking at least 3 leaves, lower margin of first leaf restored to size, occasional smudging or ink corrosion). Contemporary German blind-stamped brown calf over wooden boards, front cover with repeated emblem of a heart pierced by an arrow, lower cover with repeated rosettes and fruit within a heart shape, brass bosses engraved with single rosette, brass clasps (some restoration, new end leaves preserving contemporary inscription on front pastedown). PROVENANCE: 1. A contemporary note in German on the front pastedown, states that 'the nun Katherina Kamiserin brought this Psalter with her from Steinheim to Gotteszell in the year [14]75'. While there are a number of localities in South Germany called Steinheim, the Gotteszell referred to is probably the locality in the Bavarian Forest near Straubing. The style of the finely executed border accompanying the opening of the first Psalm is consistent with the work of illuminators active in south-eastern Germany in the second half of the 15th century. 2. Parke-Bernet, New York, 4 December 1962, lot 173. CONTENT: Psalms (lacking Psalm 17, verses 16-33, Psalm 45-46 verse 7, and the musical notation between Psalms 121 and 122), followed by Canticles, Te Deum (f.196v) and hymns.
