Beschreibung:

PTOLEMAEUS, Claudius. Untitled map of the World. Ulm: Leinhart Holle, 1482] Hand-coloured woodcut map of the world, 410 x 560mm. An untitled world map, with woodcut inscription by the woodcutter, Insculptum est per Johanne Schnitzer de Armszheim (engraved by Johann, woodcutter from Armszheim), the map coloured in a contemporary hand, the seas in ochre yellow, mountains in brown with dark brown flecks, rivers in blue, islands in green and red, the rouged wind heads on a light blue ground with dark blue flecks, tropics, equator and wind-head titles in red, yellow border. (Neatly restored tear to lower left quarter of the map, some minor restoration to the margins at lower left corner and lower margin). An important world map, the first woodcut version of a Ptolemaic world map and the first to be made outside Italy. This version also attempts to update the Ptolemaic image, probably based on a manuscript of Donnus Nicolaus Germanus of the 1470's, the map showing a rudimentary Scandinavia and Greenland in an extension across the upper border. Shirley, Mapping of the World 10; Campbell, The Earliest Printed Maps 1472-1500 , 179.
