(4to) 11¼x9, bound in early nineteenth century full green morocco, ruled in gilt, spines lettered in gilt, raised bands, marbled endpapers, all edges gilt, each with a different fore-edge painting: Volume I with pencil note stating: “Rio de Janeiro The Bay”; Volume II with pencil note stating: “Rio de Janeiro The Aquaduct,” of which is likely The Carioca Aquaduct. Each housed in recent quarter green morocco and cloth slipcases with gilt-lettered black morocco spine labels. Attractively bound set with well-executed fore-edge paintings, circa late nineteenth century, both of Rio de Janeiro during the earlier colonial period. The second volume’s fore-edge shows the Carioca Aquaduct, known as the Arches (Os Arcos da Lapa) was built in 1750 by engineer José Fernandes Alpoim to help with the constant problem of low amounts of fresh water.
