RABEL, JEAN (1540/45-1603), artist and engraver ]. Cartouches de diferentes Inventions, tres utilles a plussieurs sortes de Personnes. Paris: Chez Francois l'Anglois dit Chiartres, rue St. Jacques aux colonnes d'Hercule contre le Lyon d'argent. N.d. [c. 1600]. Small oblong 4to, 176 x 237mm. (6 15/16 x 9 5/16in.), dark brown crushed levant morocco gilt, g.e. by S. David plate 1 of second series with an old stain which has bled through slightly to next plate. 2 engraved titles and 24 engraved plates (2 series, each numbered 1-12); the first series comprising figures in landscapes within extravagant and imaginative cartouches, in landscape format; the second series mostly river or coastal scenes with figures and buildings in similarly contrived cartouches, in upright format. Rare. Provenance : Robert Hoe, bookplate (sale, Anderson, 24 April 1912, lot 2632).
