Ralph William Williams (American, d. 1976) Portrait of a Young Woman in Blue. Signed and dated "Ralph William Williams 52" l.r. Oil on canvas, 33 x 28 in., framed. Condition: Pinhole punctures around periphery, some with patching to the reverse, surface grime. N.B. The work of Ralph William Williams is well known, although his name may not be familiar to many. His illustrations of young women with shining hair were the face of Breck Shampoo from 1957 to 1976. Williams modified the Breck Girl look that had been established by his predecessor Charles Gates Sheldon (1889–1961) by using brighter colors and a somewhat heightened sense of movement and individuality. In later years, as women became more independent, he would take care to integrate each model's particular personality. The portrait at hand just predates the artist's time with Breck, and it is a rare example of the artist's portraiture.
