Title: Rare Black Baptist broadside for a Richmond, Virginia Religious Exhibition with a Jewish Old Testament theme - only known copy Author: Place: [Richmond, VA] Publisher: Date: 1882 ca. Description: Broadside. 6 x 9.5”: With the curious choice of Jewish biblical symbols for a Negro religious exhibition, this broadside, amateurishly printed on fragile paper, is very rare – we could locate no other copy held by any American institution. RELIGIOUS EXHIBITION…BY REV. WILLIAM TROY OF RICHMOND, VIRGINIA / The Scenes are all Sacred / THE JEWISH TABERNACLE / Moses in Ark. His reception by Pharoah’s Daughter, Moses beholding the burning Bush, the law on stones received by Moses / Ruth blessing the fields of Boaz / The Spies returned with Fruit / The late Missionary to Africa / Rev. S. Cosby’s Picture, its inquiry, asking who will take his place. Rev. E.G.Corprew With the Proclamation ‘Go Preach the Gospel’ / Rev. John Jasper Rev. Charles Spurgeon / Joshua Praying the Sun to Stand still / Singing will accompany / Scenes All Through / Let every body come / Admission…15cts. The reference to Rev. Solomon Cosby, missionary of the Colored Baptist Convention of Virginia, who graduated from the Richmond Institute in 1878 and died in 1881 in present-day Nigeria, places this in the early 1880s. The four preachers named were the leading Baptist clergy of Richmond; particularly notable was Rev.John Jasper, a former slave-turned-philosopher who was such a spell-binding orator, that many who heard his famous sermon, “The Sun Do Move” (which poet Langston Hughes later used as title for a musical drama) were convinced of his theory that the sun revolved around the earth.
