The bold heading, above and below handsome sailing vignettes, reads "Confederate States of America, Register of Vessels." This rare document certifies the registration of the fifty-four ton schooner, Blanchette. It reads in part: "John F. Gilbert having taken or subscribed the oath required by Law and having Sworn that Thomas E. Roberts of Wilmington N.C. is the only owner of the Ship or Vessel called the Blanchette... whereof John F. Gilbert is at present Master and is a citizen of the Confederate States, and that the said Ship or Vessel was Built at Wilmington N.C. during the year eighteen hundred and sixty two..." The certificate then gives the characteristics and dimensions of the vessel ("one deck and two masts... length is sixty two feet... she is a schooner."
