Lot of 31 RPPCs and 17 printed postcards. The RPPCs are black-and-white; some are used, most are not; those with dates are from roughly 1900 - 1915 or so. Most are of African-Americans in all aspects of life: one view shows a group of children with over a half-dozen adults, possibly a church or school group. Interestingly, this is a mixed group, both black and white (adults and kids), although the white kids here seem to be in the minority. There is an infant in a christening gown, another with a young woman under an an arbor of flowers (wedding?), one of a couple dressed in their finest with "Happy New Year" below, a woman holding a horse hitched to a buggy in front of a house, and many more. Of the commercially produced cards, one is a cartoon showing a father with an infant and the caption "I am holding my own, " used and dated 1895. Of the others, six are black-and-white and ten are in color. The postcards depict: "Joe Ballard - Blacksmith, Politician, Philosopher, Salisbury, N.C."; one is captioned "Negro Island;" four show African Americans harvesting crops - pineapples in Hawaii, oranges in Florida, cotton in Texas, and one unusual image of "Dipping and Scraping Pine Trees, Turpentine Industry." Although there are no people in the picture, another shows barrels of whale oil on the docks in New Bedford, MA. One image is of the "Old Slave Block, Fredericksburg, Virginia," with a gentleman standing in the spot where he was sold as a 15-year-old. Another image is of Man-o'-War, held by an African American groom. One image shows the "Old Military Crossing on Blue River, Manhattan, Kan." One is of an African American couple captioned "Courting." A humorous one shows a small child hanging on to a saddle on a mule/burrow captioned "You Can't Shake Your Kid." One is of an impressive timber "snow shed" over a part of the CPRR near Donner Peak, with an African American - presumably one of the carpenters - sitting on another timber. Another image is of baptism in a river, with many people watching from boats, women with umbrellas shading them. A rather disturbing image is of a "Whipping Post, Dover, Del." with an African American man being whipped, dozens of people watching. (Apparently corporal punishment in the form of whipping continued in Delaware right through the 1940s, not surprisingly, more so for blacks and poor folks than upper and middle class whites. The last public whipping took place in 1952 but was only stricken from the statutes in 1972.) The last is of a "Happy Family" showing an older woman with four young children (possibly their grandmother). Provenance: Dr. John W. Ravage Collection of African American Photography Condition: Condition variable, with some surface soil, especially on those mailed. A couple have been trimmed, and a couple have chipped corners.
