Two books, edited by Charles Robert Ashbee recording the operations of the "Pro-Jerusalem Society" and outlining its plans in the years 1918-1922. London, 1921-1924. English. 1. Jerusalem 1918-1920, "Being the records of the Pro Jerusalem council during the period of the British military administration". London, 1921. The book includes 79 photographs, drawings and maps (plates). Among them: Two folding maps of Jerusalem (Town Planning Scheme) and numerous photographs of the Old City of Jerusalem. XV, [1], 87, [1] pp + plates, 28.5 cm. Good condition. Stains (stained first and last leaves). Inscription from 1921 on the front endpaper and ink stamps on the inner side of the front binding. Slight stains and defects to binding. 2. Jerusalem 1920-1922: Being the records of the Pro Jerusalem council during the first two years of the civil administration. London, 1924. The book includes 69 photographs, drawings and maps (plates), among them: a folding plan of the interior of the Church of the Holy Sepulchre, a zoning map of Jerusalem (folding), plan of Talpiot neighborhood, photographs of the Old City Gates, and more. XVI, 109 pp + plates. 28.5 cm. Stains (numerous stains to first and last leaves). Ink stamps on inner side of front binding. Slight stains and defects to binding. On the cover of both books appears the symbol of the Pro Jerusalem Society which integrates a Star of David, crosses and a crescent with the verse "Walk about Zion and go around the Towers". The "Pro-Jerusalem Society" was founded in 1918 by the first British governor of Jerusalem, Sir Ronald Storrs, and was active in Jerusalem until the termination of the British Mandate. The goal of this society was to develop Jerusalem through the protection of its historic parts. The society was engaged in cleaning and preserving the Tower of David, renovating and restoring ceramic tiles of the Dome of the Rock, constructing public buildings, restoring historic buildings, planting trees, and more.
