In 1886, Redon was introduced to Belgian author Jules Destrée by his friend Joris-Karl Huysmans; Destrée then introduced Redon to Emile Verhaeren. Verhaeren, a Belgian poet who wrote in French, was one of the founders of the school of Symbolism, which traces its beginnings to the publication of Baudelaire's Les Fleurs du mal (1857). Redon became the most significant artist for the Belgian Symbolists, and he regularly contributed works to their salons.
