REGIMEN SANITATIS SALERNITANUM. Commentary ascribed to Arnoldus de Villanova. Corrected by the Doctores Montispessulani regentes . [Venice: Bernardinus Venetus, de Vitalibus, or Joannes Baptista Sessa, about 1504?]. Chancery 4° (198 x 140mm). Collation: a-t 8 u 6 (a1r title, woodcut, a1v blank, a2r text with commentary surround). 82 leaves. 29 lines. Type: 120R. Title woodcut of a magister with scientific implements and his pupil. 19th-century calf, blindstamped (slightly rubbed at extremities), gilt edges. Provenance : Luton, pencilled inscription. The most popular medical handbook of the Middle Ages, the Regimen sanitatis came from the school of Salerno, the first medical school in the West. While required for physicians, it was also widely read by lay people for its advice on health, diet and hygiene. This is one of three nearly-identical editions attributed to Bernardinus de Vitalibus; the AnnMary Brown catalogue suggests this edition is actually a reprint by Sessa of a Vitalibus edition. HC 13750; Goff R-81; Sander 6390; Klebs 830.14; AmBCat 285
