First Edition. Hunter crossed the plains to Oregon in 1852 at the age of 17; his narrative includes accounts of mining life in Shasta City, the Rouge River Indian War of 1852, the events which led to the massacre of Dr. Whitman, the Civil War, the gold strikes at Kootenia in British Columbia, the Nez Perce War, his duties as interpreter for General Howard, etc. Cowan (II), p. 298; Graff 2018; Howes H811; Smith 4819.
