Title: Reminiscences of Golf on St. Andrews Links Author: Balfour, James Place: Edinburgh Publisher: David Douglas Date: 1887 Description: [6], 68 + [2, ads.] pp. 6½x4¼, original printed red wrappers. First Edition. Includes a previously unrecorded 2¾x5½ black and white prospectus sheet, advertising Balfour's Reminiscences of Golf... "Now Ready, Price 1s" and Shakespeare on Golf with Special Reference to St. Andrews Links published by David Douglas (on other side). This rare piece of ephemera not mentioned in any golf references consulted. The Balfours were a well-known golfing family, the most skillful of whom was James' son, Leslie Balfour-Melville, who won the British Amateur in 1895. The book relates tales of the Old Course during a time when there were relatively few golfers and is of great interest because it gives one of the few first-hand accounts of how the course was played in those early days. "One of the rarest of all golf items" - Murdoch 30; D&M 600; D&J B2890. Lot Amendments Condition: Light creases including on spine and corners (2½" to bottom front cover), some bubbling to covers, slight soiling, thin and short black ink mark on front cover margin; occasional tiny black dots at front and back; very good or better. Seldom seen in better condition and in original binding state. Item number: 190342
