REPTON, Humphry. Sketches and Hints on Landscape Gardening . London: W. Bulmer and Co., for J. & J. Boydell, n.d. [but 1794].
REPTON, Humphry. Sketches and Hints on Landscape Gardening . London: W. Bulmer and Co., for J. & J. Boydell, n.d. [but 1794]. 2 o ( 354 x 259 mm). Half-title. 16 aquatint plates comprising 10 hand-colored plates with overslips (four folding) and 6 monochromatic plates, four with overslips. (A few small splits along folds of folding plates.) Contemporary red morocco gilt, Roxburghe arms at center of each cover, smooth spine gilt (some staining along outer edges of covers). Provenance : John Ker (1740-1804), 3rd Duke of Roxburghe (binding); A. J. Winhall (early gift inscription from S. Wallis on flyleaf). FIRST EDITION OF THIS GROUND-BREAKING BOOK ON LANDSCAPE GARDENING, illustrated with superb aquatint plates with moveable overslips which demonstrate the transformative potential of garden design. Repton was the first to adopt the term "Landscape Gardening," explaining in his introduction that "the art can only be advanced and perfected by the united powers of the landscape painter and the practical gardener . The former must conceive a plan, which the latter may be able to execute... yet the luxuriant imagination of the painter must be subjected to the gardener's practical knowledge in painting, digging, and moving earth." The work lists 57 of the estates on which Repton worked, and the plates derive from Repton's "red books" in which he planned his designs. Abbey Scenery 388; Tooley 210.
