Attributed to Andrea T. Gavell, an employee of the Rock Island Railroad (American, active late 19th-early 20th century), ca 1905. A panoramic reverse glass and mother-of-pearl inlaid advertisement for the Rock Island Route showing a Rocky Mountain landscape in Colorado, housed in its original wooden frame with title Rock Island Route.; 14.25 x 89.5 in. (sight), 23.25 x 98.75 in. (frame). Note: This sign includes an original error: one train says United States EXRPESS. Other examples are known with EXPRESS spelled correctly. This is also a rarer version of this sign because there is not a cowboy and cattle in the foreground. This version of the scene is less common. Only fifty of these signs were believed to have been made, and many of those have not survived the passage of time. Condition: Large Y shaped crack near center of panel. Areas of loss to mother of pearl (e.g. Chair Car label).
