REVOLUTIONARY WAR, BATTLE OF BENNINGTON]. WEARE, MESHECH, Revolutionary patriot, Governor. Letter signed ("M Weare Chairman") as head of the New Hampshire Committee of Safety, TO NEW HAMPSHIRE SIGNER JOSIAH BARTLETT and Col. Nathaniel Peabody, Exeter, 23 August 1777. 1 page, folio, 290 x 215 mm. (11½ x 8½ in.), text in a bold clerical hand, integral blank docketed by Bartlett, second leaf neatly inlaid. Fine. THE AFTERMATH OF THE AMERICAN VICTORY IN THE BATTLE OF BENNINGTON Written a week after the resounding American victory at Bennington won by General Stark's New Hampshire and Massachusetts militia, Weare, as Chairman of the Committee of Safety, directs assistance to the wounded men of the victorious American army: "You are appointed, and Desired Immediately to Repair to Bennington, and do Every thing in your power to assist the Sick and wounded men of General Starks Brigade of Militia of this State, and to Consult with & advise General Stark with Respect to any further operations, and to procure an Exact Amount of the late Action of General Starks with the Brittish [ sic ] Troops. And Further you are Empowered to do and transact any matters and things with Respect to Said Brigade that you may think Necessary..." General John Stark (1728-1822) and his 1,500 men had soundly defeated a Hessian force sent to Bennington by General Burgoyne; it was a harbinger of the soon-to-follow victory over Burgoyne's main army at Saratoga.
