Beschreibung:

RIDINGER, Johann Elias (1698-1767). [ Jäger und Falkoniers mit ihren Verrichtungen . Augsburg: J.E. Ridinger, c. 1764.] 2° (365 x 288mm). 25 engraved plates by Martin Elias Ridinger after J.E. Ridinger lettered A-Z and captioned in German and French. (Very light browning, variable light spotting and marking.) Contemporary German patterned paper boards, boards with gilt-ruled borders, upper board with gilt leather lettering-piece bearing title 'JäGER', lower board with gilt armorial, spine gilt in compartments (some rubbing, particularly at extremities, some scuff marks neatly recoloured), red edges. Provenance : von Behr family, Stellicht (contemporary armorial on binding and early 20th-century inkstamp on front free endpaper) -- Peter Kraus (20th-century bookplate on upper pastedown). RIDINGER'S RARE AND 'TRèS BELLE SUITE' (Thiébaud), comprising 25 engravings of hunting and hawking scenes. The set appears to have been issued without a title-page; as Schwerdt noted in 1928, 'Thienemann 113 speaks of a title page, but, although he asked for information on this point as long ago as 1856, no title page has ever been traced'. The de Beaufort-Schwerdt copy contains a manuscript title commissioned by de Beaufort, and this may have misled Thiébaud into erroneously calling for a title (cf. Thiébaud p.IX, stating that he was unable to inspect certain rarities personally, but that 'le catalogue de la magnifique collection Schwerdt, dont les descriptions ne laissent rien à désirer [and the Jeanson collection] nous ont heuresement permis d'atteindre plusieurs livres uniques'; the Jeanson copy does not contain a title). Only two copies (including the Jeanson copy) are recorded at auction since 1975. Schwerdt III, pp. 136-7; Thiébaud 783-4.
