RIMSKY-KORSAKOV, Nikolai Andreevich (1844-1908). Autograph music manuscript signed (in Russian 'N. Rimsky-Korsakov') and dated 1898, 'Dedicated to Fyodor Ivanovich Chaliapin Aria Tsar Ivan' from The Maid of Pskov , Act III, scene 2, the full score, in ink, a number of erasures, cancellations and emendations, in particular to the woodwind parts, further annotations (perhaps in other hands) in lead pencil and red and blue crayons, autograph title and 12 pages, 4to (380 x 255mm) (light browning throughout, some staining and spotting to outer leaves). RIMSKY-KORSAKOV'S TRIBUTE TO THE GREAT CHALIAPIN. The aria was added in response to Chaliapin's magisterial interpretation of what was to be one of his signature roles, that of Ivan the Terrible.
