RIVINUS, August Quirinus (1652-1723). [ Introductio generalis in rem herbarium , vol. III:] Ordo plantarum quae sunt florae irregulari tetrapetalo . Leipzig: Christoph Fleischeri, 1691. Part III only (of 6), 2 o (433 x 284 mm). 119 engraved plates (browned and somewhat spotted). Contemporary calf, spine gilt (a bit rubbed and worn at corners, lower cover a bit wormed). Provenance : purchased from Quaritch, 1965. FIRST EDITION of the third part of Rivinus's fine illustrated work. In it he set out his system of classification based on floral structure. Rivinus was the first to use the binomial system of nomenclature. The first three volumes were published 1690-91; a fourth volume was added in 1699; and two posthumous volumes were published in 1764 and 1777. Bibliographies of the book disagree as to plate count; this copy corresponds to Nissen. Nissen 1642; Stafleu & Cowan TL2 9268.
