Robert Wilson (American, b. 1941) Rudolf Hess Beach Chairs Incised with title, numbered, initialed, and dated "Beach Chair/3/6/RW/'90" and stamped "RW/WORK LTD/EDITIONS DOSI DELFINI" on a brass plate attached to underside of larger chair. Nickel plated steel, sizes to 28 x 23 3/4 x 82 in. (71.1 x 60.3 x 208.3 cm). Condition: Scattered minor scratches, small areas of oxidation, one missing screw and loose element to the underside of larger chair, scattered wipe marks. Provenance: John L. Stewart Collection, New York, through to the current private collection, New Hampshire. N.B. A master of restraint and austerity, Robert Wilson has devoted his career to creating Gesamtkunstwerks, productions that combine all art genres. His experimental theater works display his dexterity as a director, playwright, set/lighting designer, choreographer, and visual artist. His sculptural and furniture pieces make their debuts on the stage as important elements that Wilson considers to be performers on equal par with the actors. These pieces then proceed to galleries, museums, and private collections where they exist as independent artworks, separate from the theatrical productions for which they were made. This work was originally designed for Wilson's 1979 theatrical production of Death, Destruction and Detroit at the Schaubühne Berlin.
