Silver gelatin photograph, 7.75 x 9.75 in. (sight), matted, mounted, and framed, 16.5 x 18.5 in. Copyrighted 1908 and signed lower right by Reed. An untitled, artfully composed photograph capturing "Ringing Bells," an Ojibwe, seated on a large rock with pipe in hand. Royal W. "Roland" Reed, Jr., (1864-1934) was a prominent early 20th century photographer and Pictorialist. His work emphasized American Indian life as it might have been rather than simply recording it. With his photography, Reed set out to capture and preserve the vanishing life and culture of Indian people. Condition: Minor surface abrasion along left portion of photograph (near center of left edge). Otherwise very attractive photograph, retaining rich tones.
