FootnotesBonhams is delighted to offer the Rolex Submariner worn by Academy Award winner Dame Vanessa Redgrave in the 1966 film Blow Up. The watch has been seen by millions of viewers of the cult classic on the wrist of Redgrave's character 'Jane', worn on a black strap, over her shirt cuff. Blow Up has been described as "One of the seminal films of the time, perfectly capturing 1960s London chic" making a Rolex Submariner 5513 the ideal choice.
The watch was purchased for £90 from Asprey's Bond Street store and worn by Vanessa Redgrave throughout the production of the film, where it can be seen in the majority of her on screen scenes as well as in photographs from the set. The appearance of the typically men's Rolex on Redgrave's wrist draws comparisons to Honour Blackman sporting a Rolex GMT 6542 as Pussy Galore in the 1964 James Bond film Goldfinger. As with Honour Blackman, the wearing of a 'Man's' watch was a highly unusual provocative statement signalling a gender equality that was only just finding traction at the time.
After the filming of Blow Up was completed, the watch was purchased from the production company by the current owner who served as the set construction manager for the film. As a member of the British Sub-Aqua Club, he was keen to acquire the watch and is the only person other than Vanessa Redgrave to have worn it, having enjoyed it for over 50 years. Throughout that time the watch has been sent to Rolex for several maintenance services and refurbishments including the service replacement of the dial.Read MoreAdditional informationAuction informationBonhams cannot arrange for the delivery of lots containing mother of pearl or ruby into the United States due to import restrictions. Please note that in some circumstances we are unable to ship the watch with its strap due to regulations regarding material derived from endangered or otherwise protected species. The buyer or designated agent may collect the property in the country of sale. For information and estimates on domestic and international shipping please contact ThePackengers on:
