ROMANCE COMICS: Lot of Three MATT BAKER Comic Books * CINDERELLA LOVE No. 14 * PICTORIAL LOVE STORIES No. 1 * TRUE LOVE PICTORIAL No. 6 Publisher: St. John [Indicia: St. John Publishing Co.] Date Published: 1952-1954 Description: CINDERELLA LOVE #14: Good+ (2.5). Mild spine stress, 1/2" split to top spine, a few nicks and bumps to edges, top staple pulled, bound without bottom staple (there are no bottom staple holes, so this is a bindery flaw, not damage), light cover creases and soil, ballpoint pen curlicues to top margin of back cover. Cream pages, light tan edges. Nice-lookin' mag; if not for the absent bottom staple and ballpoint scribbles, would be a solid 4.0. Cover: Unknown painter with a charmingly banal style. Art: One Matt Baker story (Ray Osrin inks). CGC Census: Four copies, the highest being 6.0. GPAnalysis: Only one reported sale: a 5.0 sold for $250 in 6/20. PICTORIAL LOVE STORIES #1: GOOD (2.0). Spine roll, staple rust, a few transverse tears to spine, back cover heavily creased, some shmutz to back cover, grease-pencilled distributor's mark to logo box ("P8N"). Cream pages, edges very slightly tan. Cover: Matt Baker. Art: One possible Matt Baker story (with Ray Osrin inks?). GPAnalysis: Lowest-graded sale is a 5.0 that fetched $109 in 3/15. TRUE LOVE PICTORIAL #6: Good+ (2.5). Mild spine roll, moderate spine stress, small chips to spine ends, staple rust with rust migration to top staple area, cover detached at top staple, bottom staple severely pulled with cover hanging on by a strip of torn paper, a few edge nicks. If not for staple situation, not a bad mag. Pages cream to light tan, like Mr. Baker himself. Cover: Matt Baker. Art: One Matt Baker story. GPAnalysis: Lowest-graded sale is a 4.5 that sold for $456 in 8/21. Trio of red-hot romance rags with art by Matt Baker, the possibly-gay black sex machine who drew the foxiest white gals in the business. "How did black artist Matt Baker feel about drawing sexy scenes set in country clubs and on beaches where he dared not show his fro in the age of Jim Crow? Baker's tales of mendacious minxes and misunderstood mofos read like coded confessions seeded with hidden clues to the enigmatic artist's inner life. Baker died of a heart attack in 1959, never having done an interview, leaving his curious fans to fill in the blanks as best they can." — PBA Comics, Sale 3022, Lot 284. Enjoying the Sale?
