Romanesque Champleve Enamel and Gilded Copper Repousse Processional Cross Probably Abruzzo, 13th century The cross with trefoil ends, one side depicting the crucified Christ with a panel above engraved JESUS, a panel below possibly engraved SALVATOR MUNDI, the ends of the cross with figures of the Archangel Michael, the Virgin and St. John, and mounted with three enamel roundels, the reverse with the seated figure of Christ upon a throne flanked by birds' heads, the ends of the cross with emblems of the Four Evangelists, with halo and four roundels of the Evangelists in human form, in red and green. Height 22 inches (55.8 cm). Provenance: Parke-Bernet Galleries, New York, May 2, 1957, By descent to the present owner The form of the cross, the repousse work, the use of roundels beside/around the principal figures, and the isolated patterns of punch marks are similar to the crosses found in the Abruzzo region of Italy, east of Rome on the Adriatic coast.
