ROOSEVELT'S PRE-ELECTION DAY CONFIDENCE: "I AM GOING TO CELEBRATE TOMORROW NIGHT!" A fine letter which reflects Roosevelt's certainty that he would be elected the 32nd President of the United States on the night before the election. Roosevelt, the popular Governor of New York, was the favored candidate for president as the Democratic party convened in Chicago in June, 1932. After winning the nomination on the fourth ballot, Roosevelt launched a strenuous campaign which focused upon his plans for lifting the nation out of the Depression. Here, the soon-to-be President-elect responds to an invitation with undisguised confidence: "I hope you will have a very happy occasion. I am sorry that I can not look in upon you but you know, I am sure, my predicament - I just can not celebrate two nights running. I am going to celebrate tomorrow night!" Roosevelt's confidence was not unwarranted. He won the election handily over the much-maligned Herbert Hoover with 57 of the popular vote.
