ROOSEVELT, Theodore (1858-1919), President . Cabinet photo signed ("Theodore Roosevelt") as New York Assemblyman, by the Notman Photographic Company of Albany, N.Y. (imprint at bottom and on verso), [Albany, N.Y., ca. 1884]. 6 5/8 x 4¼ inches, minor discoloration along edges, "l" in signature slightly smeared , otherwise in fine condition. A FINE SIGNED PORTRAIT OF A YOUNG TEDDY ROOSEVELT In 1882, Theodore Roosevelt launched an eventful political career as the youngest member of the New York Assembly. The rookie assemblyman took an interest in reform from the outset and earned a reputation for his tough stands against the corruption of party machine politics. To many of his colleagues, Roosevelt was nothing more than an "irritating gadfly" who "never doubted the moral certainty of his positions" (Miller, Theodore Roosevelt: A Life , p. 127). His record served him well, however, and his political star rose quickly within the Republican Party. Here, the young assemblyman, sporting the same mustache and hair style that is familar in later, better known images, exudes an air of quiet confidence as he gazes past the camera.
