Title: Rubaiyat of Omar Khayyam Author: (Sangorski & Sutcliffe) Place: London Publisher: Siegle, Hill & Co. Date: c. 1911 Description: Translated by Edward Fitzgerald Introduction by A.C. Benson. Reproduced in colors from a manuscript written and illuminated by Francis Sangorski & George Sutcliffe. (Folio) 13¼x10, original full vellum elaborately gilt, black morocco spine label, upper cover with a peacock painted in colors, top edge gilt, metal clasps, silk endleaves; original cloth box. Binding stamp-signed "Sangorski & Sutcliffe". No. 1 of 25 copies printed on Japanese vellum and signed by both Sangorski and Sutcliffe. The first copy of a deluxe edition limited to only 25. Sangorski and Sutcliffe's interpretations of the Rubaiyat are justly famous and among their most important work. "The Great Omar", a nearly legendary copy in an exquisite jewelled binding, was on its way to America when it sunk with the Titanic in 1912. Francis Sangorski died later that year. The cloth box on the present copy is plain but appears to be original; the front cover is hand-lettered with a description and registration number matching that on the volume. Lot Amendments Condition: Box stained and worn at edges; volume with some rubbing of gilt on spine and a little darkening to vellum, touch of insect-wear to turn-ins, color plates with mild spotting to the versos occasionally offset to facing pages, a few minor fingersoils; very good and a special copy. Item number: 166026
