RUSKIN, JOHN. Notes on some of the Principal Pictures of Sir John Everett Millais exhibited at the Grovesnor Gallery, 1886. Edited by A.Gordon Crawford. London: William Reeves [1886]. Large 8° (275 x 180mm). Half-title. DARK-GREEN CRUSHED LEVANT MOROCCO GILT BY CHARLES MCLEISH SENIOR, covers panelled with 14 fillets and a greek-key pattern border, spine in six compartments with raised bands, lettered in two, the others with repeat tooling, gilt turn-ins, g.e., signed: C.McL - 1914 (spine very slightly faded). FINE COPY ON LARGE PAPER of this collection of Ruskin's commentaries on Millais's works. The elegant binding is also technically very accomplished, with the greek-key pattern produced from individual tools. McLeish (1859-1949) worked as forwarder for the Doves Bindery, and was joined by his son Charles junior in 1909.
