SAINT AGATHA, historiated initial "G", on a leaf from an ILLUMINATED MANUSCRIPT CHOIR BOOK ON VELLUM [South Eastern Germany or Austria, circa 1450] Upper portion of a leaf, 325x445mm, initial 145x150mm, yellow with foliate pattern, on burnished gold ground with leafy pattern, purple and lilac border, with coloured leafy and floral extensions. St. Agatha, crowned, is standing in a blue robe, holding in one hand a martyr's palm branch and in the other a dish bearing two female breasts, on orange patterned ground. Leaf numbered at head lxii. Text in black ink in a large gothic textura. 4 lines of music in 'hufnagel' notation on red four-line staves. 4 lines of music on verso, with two large calligraphic initials. The miniature introduces the Response for the Nocturn at Vespers on the feast of St.Agatha (28 January) ' Gaudeamus omnes in domino diem'
